SUEZ - Water Technologies & Solutions (SUEZ WTS) has recognized Tacora Resources, an iron ore mining and development company, with its Return on Environment (ROE) Award for reducing emissions and operating costs at Tacora’s steam plant in Canada.
The ROE award recognizes SUEZ WTS customers for significantly surpassing and improving environmental and industrial operational goals while balancing industrial demands. SUEZ WTS and Tacora partnered to implement a mobile water treatment solution in just two weeks after one of Tacora’s boilers failed. The solution enabled Tacora to avoid burning 25,000 liters per day of bunker oil, saving CAD$1.35MM and preventing the release of 5,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).
The Tacora mine, located in the town of Wabush, Newfoundland and Labrador, features two electric boilers and two oil-fired boilers. They primarily operate the electric boilers because it helps reduce their environmental impact compared to operating the oil-fired boilers.
SUEZ WTS and Tacora quickly deployed and commissioned the mobile water solution after the initial failure. For two months, the system successfully treated the feedwater to the high purity level required by the No. 2 electric boiler without any interruption of steam production as the No. 1 boiler was repaired.
“We are honored to earn this recognition from SUEZ WTS,” says Tacora’s Achille Njike, Executive Vice President of Operations. “We strongly believe that our operations must build a sustainable future for our employees, partners, stakeholders, and communities in which we operate. In partnership with SUEZ WTS, we were able to quickly address a challenging situation at our Wabush mine steam plant in a way that supports our approach to sustainability and maximizes value for all.”
